A Guide To English Country House Style
The coronation of King Charles III has rekindled a love of all things British — including English country house style. This quaint, lived-in, and often eccentric decorating style has captured imaginations thanks to captivating and sumptuously styled period dramas like Downton Abbey and The Crown. English country decorating has a long heritage. If you share our love of this quintessentially British style, read on to discover its unique history and our secrets to achieving an authentic look for your own home. What is English country style interior design? English country home decor has an enduring appeal. Romantic but homely, cosy and relaxed —but with a dash of eccentricity. Think antique furnishings, spacious deep-seated sofas with a generous scattering of cushions, cosy table lamps, lashings of floral wallpaper, woodpaneling and stacks of books. British country style is a balance of charm and grandeur. The furniture should look like its been in your family for generations without making your home feel like a museum. English decorating isn't minimal! It's lavishly luxuriant but oh-so cosy at the same time. Think freshly cut flowers on an opulent ottoman and a spaniel dozing by the living room fire. If you feel like you've stepped into a scene from a Jane Austen novel, you're on the right track! What is the history of English country style? Oddly enough, an American is credited with popularising the English country house style. In the 1940s, tastemaker Nancy Lancaster bought Colefax and Fowler, an influential British decorating firm. Together with John Fowler, the 'prince of decorators', she crystalised what is now known as the quintessentially English country style. Born American, Nancy lived in England from 1927 and had a knack for British sensibilities. She decorated both Kelmarsh Hall in Northamptonshire and Ditchley Park in Oxfodshire with such beauty and style that society applauded her as having "the best taste of almost anyone in the world." Nancy famously claimed that her secret to style success was to put 'something a little bit ugly' in every room! How to decorate your home like an English country home Minimalists might call the English cottage style cluttered, but we prefer the term layered and timeless. English country houses are famously eccentric. Part of their charm is that they allow for a lived-in look while retaining a vibrant flair. Robert Kime who designed the interior of Clarence House for King Charles is a masterful example. Warm, cosy lighting invites you to curl up on the luxuriant sofas while decadent touches like lavish drapes and candle sconces give the room gravitas. And no house is fit for royalty without a pair of wingback chairs to read from. Luckily, you don't need a king's ransom to decorate your home in the English country style. Auctions or flea markets are great places to find affordable antique furniture. Investing in one or two key items, like an English-style sofa, library chairs, or a table footstool will do much of the heavy lifting. Layer colour and texture to bring the room together. Natural fabrics like dark wood, sisal, and leather work well in an English country home. Don't be afraid to add eccentricity with an unexpectedly strong colour or William Morris wallpaper.Other elements like heirloom furniture, ornaments, and landscape paintings are reminiscent of the cosy atmosphere in English homes. While draped tables and chintz sofas are hallmarks of the English country style, modern designers have introduced a contemporary edge with 'shabby chic' elements. The faded grandeur of stripped-back paint, striped sofas, and harmonious colour schemes have brought chic elegance to the English countryside without losing timeless charm. Our top tips on how to decorate like the British Sold on taking inspiration from the English country house for your next room scheme? Here are our top tips to achieve the look: 1. Choose classic British-made furniture Quintessential British interiors contain a mix of wood furniture, slouchy sofas, and heritage pieces upholstered in artisanal fabrics like tweed, tartan, and leather. There are a few classic styles you should keep your eye out for at auction houses or showrooms: English Roll Arm Sofa No English country home is complete without a roll arm sofa. Notable for its scroll-like rolled arms, plush deep seat, and supportive back, this is a piece worth spending on. If well-made you'll have it for life. The frames are made from sturdy solid wood and the legs are often accompanied with a porcelain or solid brass castor, with some sofa companies having multiple upholstery options so you can customise your sofa to suit the room. Mismatched cushions and throws are key to the look. Patterns with floral motifs and bright colours are acceptable on walls and lampshades, too! Slipcovered Sofa with Ruffle Skirt Bring British charm into your home with a slipcovered sofa. Slipcovers have been used for centuries. In the 18th century, custom-made slip covers were popular with the English aristocracy who wanted ruffles, piping, buttons, and extravagant patterns. Even Jane Austen referenced her 'sofa-cover' in a letter! Pick a slipcover with ruffles to create a romantic look, then curl up with a cup of tea and Pride and Prejudice. Chippendale Chairs Thomas Chippendale, a Yorkshireman and cabinet maker, invented this authentically English style. Chippendale chairs are perfect dining room companions and can add elegance to an English country kitchen. Influenced by the Queen Anne style, most Chippendale chairs feature legs with dark wood, like mahogany. There are six different styles of leg to choose from: the lion's paw, the ball-and-claw foot, the Late Chippendale, the Marlborough, the club, and the spade. 2. Bright Colours Don't be afraid of colour, even Clarence House features bold pops of red and bright teal. We're no strangers to bad weather in the UK. A colourful living room is one way to brighten the mood on rainy days and fits with the eclectic vibe of British interiors. 3. Use an opulent ottoman as a coffee table Ottomans make perfect coffee tables. For that English country look style with a vase of flowers or even a messy stack of magazines. Fabulously oversized, you can drape them with mismatched throws or use them as extra seating when guests appear. A faithful hound atop your ottoman completes the English countryside look. 4. William Morris wallpaper William Morris was a Victorian British textile designer, artist, and poet. His prints are now world-famous wallpaper designs and add a touch of British heritage to rooms. Morris pioneered the Arts & Crafts movement and stood by handmade designs and artistry. His passion for craftsmanship shines through famous designs like striking Strawberry Thief and stylish Snakeshead. Morris once passionately declared, “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful”. We think that's a quote to live by! 5. Floral Tea Sets Who doesn't afternoon tea? It's quintessentially British and can provide inspiration for your dining room. Adorable vintage tea sets are easy to find online and in charity shops. You could even display pretty plates on the walls of your living room for an eccentric twist. 6. Wainscoting Wainscoting is 16th century wall panelling technique that began in England. Traditionally it is used to divide a room in half but modern interpretations take it to the top. There's something cosy about wood panelling that evokes country clubs and secretive studies. Keep it dark for a traditional English look or go modern with either neutral white or striking colour. 7. Pile On The Plaid English homes are cosy. Layer plaid blankets over sofa arms and ottomans to add texture and keep you warm during chilly winters. Plaid patterns can also be repeated in upholstery or soft furnishings to tie a room scheme together. 8. Chintz Love it or loathe it, chintz is emblematic of English country style. Chintz is patterned cloth why a shiny appearance and has been used in English upholstery for decades. Chintz originated in India but made its way to Europe in the 17th century. Chintz has fallen in and out of style throughout the decades. In the 80s Princess Diana made the classic cloth popular again but a backlash followed in the 90s — even IKEA urged people to chuck chintz away! Regardless of fashion whims, florals remain fundamental to British interior design. So why not embrace the quirky beauty of chintz? 9. Eclectic Artwork Imagine the quintessential English manor and you'll probably conjure walls replete with historic portraits and bucolic landscapes. Fireplaces lined with gilt figurines and bookended by Staffordshire China Dogs or candlesticks complete the image. Etsy and eBay are great places to track down quirky pieces of pottery and vintage artwork. 10. Potted Plants Bring the English garden indoors with an eclectic array of potted plants. Roses and geraniums work well on coffee tables and windowsills, while house plants add garden greenery all year round. 11. Add one 'ugly thing' to each room If it's good enough for tastemaker Nancy Lancaster, it's good enough for us! Everyone's idea of 'ugly' will differ. A clashing pattern or scuffed item of inherited furniture might be enough, or you could take the irony one step further with an unconventional lampshade or by placing a hat on a bust. Nancy Lancaster likened decorating a room to 'mixing a salad', recognising that it's easier to relax in rooms that feel slightly messy. Artfully thrown together is key however! Remember to offset your ugly thing with intentionally curated furniture and a cohesive colour scheme. Hopefully our tips have inspired you to add some quintessential English charm to your home. Your Ultimate Guide To Buying A Velvet Sofa
Soft, sumptuous, and effortlessly stylish, velvet brings a regal look to your home. Once thought of as impractical and only seen in stately homes, velvet sofas have made a comeback. It's a common myth that velvet is hard to maintain or unsuitable for modern homes — we think velvet's lavishness is an everyday luxury! With a range of sofa styles and colours to choose from, there's a velvet sofa to suit every room scheme. Our ultimate guide will help you find a velvet sofa that's right for you, with styling tips and velvet accessories thrown in for good measure. Velvet is synonymous with decadence, after all! Why should I buy a velvet sofa? There are many reasons to choose velvet over other upholstery. The most obvious is velvet's gorgeously tactile feel — just try to resist running your hand along its lavishly plush surface! This super soft material type makes an inviting spot to curl up on at the end of the day. It's also snag-free due to the lack of raised weave. Velvet's flat pile prevents pets from catching their claws on loose threads and pet hair is easier to remove. Velvet is surprisingly practical and durable. Stains are easy to remove if you act quickly because, unlike other fabrics, spills don't sink as deep. It's less likely to crush or fade, meaning you can keep a velvet sofa for many years without signs of wear. A gentle weekly brush will maintain the pile's texture and keep your velvet sofa looking its best. Choosing the right velvet sofa Unsure whether velvet suits your lifestyle? Fortunately, there is a range of sofa styles to choose from. At The Original Chair Company, we're experts in fine upholstery and interior decorating, with a range of bespoke furniture handcrafted by artisans. Velvet is one of our specialties! Consider your lifestyle. Do you need a big family sofa or will a 2 seater do? Will your velvet sofa be the dramatic centre piece your living room needs or is it for everyday comfort? Grey upholstery for example, while still decadent in texture, will lend a neutral atmosphere while emerald green creates impact. There are a number of types of velvet that can be used on furniture, including: Mohair Velvet Linen Velvet Cotton Velvet Cotton Polyester Mix Velvet Polyester Velvet Each type of velvet offers a different amount of pile, texture and price point. The more luxurious mohair, linen and cotton velvets tend to have a lower durability than those with synthetic fibres, and therefore require more maintenance and care. Some of the polyester varieties of velvet are “almost indestructible” and are the preferred choice for those looking for a velvet appearance, without the upkeep. Cotton velvets are another great option here, as modern blends can be extremely durable if purchased from a reputable crafter, and are often used in the contract market hotels, offering a luxurious feel with the ability to be easily maintained. 2 Seater Velvet Sofas A plush 2 seater bestows bijou luxury on small rooms. Space-saving without sacrificing elegance or comfort, they work well in any living space or boudoir room. For larger rooms a 2 seater can add a striking contrast to existing furniture. Browse our range of 2 seater sofas. 3 Seater Velvet Sofas For those will more room, a 3 seater will give you ample to lounge. However, if choice overwhelms you here are some pointers: Classic Velvet Sofas Inspired by the past and timeless looks? Are velvet sofas hard to keep clean? It's a mystery why velvet sofas have a reputation for being tough to clean. 10 minutes of gentle maintenance per week is all you need to keep your velvet sofa looking good as new. A word of caution. Don’t be tempted to use chemicals on your luxurious velvet sofa. Instead, contact a professional upholstery cleaning company who will be able to provide you with an expert job, without risk of damaging the fabric. There are some simple, at home tips you can use to keep your velvet sofa looking its best. Read our velvet fabric care guide for tips on maintaining your sofa's lustre: Brush the pile Use a soft bristle brush once per week to restore your sofa's touchable, soft texture. Hoover Once a week, hoover your sofa with the brush attachment to remove dust, pet hair, or crumbs. Velvet Sofa FAQs If you're still unsure whether a velvet sofa is right for you, these customer questions might put your mind at rest. In our opinion, the price, durability, and customisable nature of velvet sofas make them timeless pieces of furniture. They really bring a slice of luxury into your home and you'll probably wonder why you didn't take the plunge sooner! We'd be delighted to talk through sofa options with you, or visit our Perth showroom to feel the irresistible decadence of velvet for yourself! How durable is a velvet couch? Traditional velvet and crushed velvet are extremely durable. Despite its softness, velvet is a hard-wearing fabric and stands up daily use. With weekly spot cleaning and a gentle hoover, your velvet sofa should endure for many years without losing any of its gorgeous sheen and lush texture. To get the most wear out of your sofa though, you should bear a few things in mind. Firstly, never use chemicals on your velvet sofa when cleaning, as harsh chemicals will ravage the silky texture. Always use soft brushes for the same reason. Secondly, keep your velvet sofa out of direct sunlight if possible. Like all materials, velvet's bold colours can fade in harsh sunlight. Preserve velvet's vibrancy by placing it in the shade. To ensure your sofa it well maintained, use a professional upholstery cleaning company every 6 months or as required, as they will have the correct products and materials for velvet, making sure no damage is done to the fabric. Do velvet sofas get dusty? If you follow the gentle cleaning tips above, you shouldn't have to worry about dust accumulating on your velvet sofa. Can you have a velvet sofa with kids? Yes! Caring for a velvet sofa when you have children is absolutely possible. Thanks to velvet's dense top layer spills don't sink all the way through the fabric, unlike linen. This gives you time to grab a damp, absorbant cloth and gently spot clean. Not only are velvet sofas family-friendly, but they're also pet-friendly too. Let's admit, no cat can resist the lure of velvet and the dogs always end up on the sofa despite house rules. Luckily, velvet's lack of loose fibres prevents claws and nails from catching and tearing the fabric. We do recommend synthetic velvet over cotton if you have small children and pets because it's slightly easier to clean and doesn't fade as quickly in direct sunlight. Are velvet sofas still fashionable? Thanks to the Millennial generation, velvet sofas have surged in popularity as an affordable home luxury. Yet the enduring appeal of velvet sofas has lasted for centuries. Linked to nobility, velvet flourished in Europe during the Renaissance period thanks to advancements in the textile industry. While interior design styles come and go, velvet is a timeless classic that adds sophistication and charm to anyone's home. The sheer range of styles and colour options alone prevents velvet sofas from becoming tired or outdated. We hope our ultimate guide to velvet sofas and armchairs helped you narrow down a statement piece for your lounge or boudoir you make a choice. Our team is always happy to chat if you need more information. Or simply browse our extensive range online to turn your wish-list sofa into a reality.

Extend Your Living Space With These Conservatory Styling Tips
Remember a time when conservatory furniture equalled wicker chairs with tie-on seat pads in a dated (and faded!) floral pattern? In the case of genuine Ercol furniture, wicker easy chairs can look stylishly modern. Fortunately, you don't need to splash out on vintage Ercol to have a beautiful conservatory. Nor do you need to stick to wicker! Conservatory furniture has come a long way and making the right choices will extend your living space and ensure you get maximum use from your conservatory. Summer is the perfect time to upgrade sunroom furniture, and with a little thought, your 'summer room' can become a place to relax or entertain all year round. Can you put normal furniture in a conservatory? The short answer is — yes! Choosing normal furniture over standard garden furniture is an expected detail that turns a humdrum conservatory into a spacious summer house or an opulent orangery. The only thing to be mindful of is that some fabrics can fade in direct sunlight. To utterly transform your wilting sunroom, bear these four considerations in mind: 1. Material Drenched in honeyed light, glazed extensions and conservatories are bright, inspiring places to work or relax. Upholstery and decor truly pops when washed with bright sunlight. However, as beautiful as sunlight is, it's harsh UV rays easily bleach fabric or wood. When it comes to the sun bleaching your beautiful, expensive upholstery, rugs, and artwork, prevention is the best cure. That's why material should be your number one consideration when choosing conservatory furniture. Built for sunnier climes, hardwearing rattan and wicker have historically been popular choices for conservatory sofas and chairs. Yet there are alternatives. This is one area where synthetic material shines! Natural fibres like cotton, silk, and leather are prone to sun discolouration. Silk is particularly vulnerable. Synthetic fibres on the other hand, like polyacrylonitrile fabrics, stand up to intense UV. Fabrics can be treated with UV stabilisers to reduce their likelihood of fading. Another tip is to continually rotate seats and cushions to minimise their exposure to sunlight. Blinds or curtains will also reduce the amount of harsh sunlight spilling into your conservatory. Finally, ensure your conservatory is built with solar glazing or laminated glass which helps prevent damage to your furnishings from UV. 2. Function Knowing how you'll use your conservatory is key to picking the right furniture. For example, will it be a place for the whole family to relax or a romantic retreat while watching the sunset? Do you plan on a chic dining space to entertain guests or a light-filled home office? How you use the room depends on the type and shape of furniture you'll need, as well as soft furnishings and decor. 3. Design A traditional orangery will benefit from classic furniture styles. Think Howard chairs or a statement Chesterfield. Create cohesion with quintessential designs like a William Morris pattern or a botanical print to imitate a timeless plant-filled orangery. Dark jewel tones like emerald green and navy blue will look vibrantly decadent when the sun pours in, echoing the Victorian's love of statement colour. Minimalist homes will come to life with slimline furniture in cool grey, black, or white. White has the added bonus of fading less in the sun! Natural wood accents, geometric shapes, and small pops of colour create impact. Using your garden room as a dining place? Sleek bar stools in bold colours add sophistication to a multi-purpose space. 4. Form What's the main perk of a conservatory? Being able to enjoy beautiful views and feeling like you're outdoors while enjoying the warmth and comfort of the inside! Excessively tall chairs or wide sofas can ruin this feeling by cluttering up space and obscuring the view. As a rule of thumb, more floor space creates the impression of a bigger room — and a wider view! A sizeable conservatory can afford statement furniture, like 3-seater corner sofas. If your conservatory is on the small side, slimline pieces will open the view from the windows and help the room feel more spacious. Conservatory ideas Conservatories can reflect your personal style as much as the rest of your home. Whether you want a multifunctional living and dining space or a bright and inspiring home office, the following ideas will help you create a garden room with personality. Double up as a dining room Conservatory extensions are a great way to create extra dining space. Never miss a glorious sunset with an open plan kitchen that leads to a conservatory dining room. Make a clear division between room 'zones' by placing a rug beneath the dining table and choosing furniture that comfortably accommodates the maximum number of guests. We have a range of dining room options for minimal, modern dining. Favour functionality Smart design choices prevent your garden room from becoming cluttered. Opt for an ottoman or sleek sideboard if you need extra storage. Keeping the floor space tidy is essential in smaller conservatories as clutter visually shrinks a room. Our bespoke ottomans and footstools provide space-saving storage without sacrificing style. A charming clash Love shabby chic? Ditzy florals and different furniture styles and textures will create a layered, vintage look. An armchair with a ruffle skirt paired with preloved or upcycled pieces is a great way to emulate dainty, vintage garden parties. Our classic armchairs are a great place to start! Throws, soft furnishings, and floral accessories will complete the look. It'll be all white All-white is a brilliantly bright look for small conservatories. Golden sunlight reflects off white furnishings to create an illusion of space. Add colour with contrasting cushions or keep the look monochromatic for a minimalistic style. Cosy up in a corner sofa Family time might be your priority, in which case there's nothing wrong with letting a chunky corner sofa dominate your garden room! Corner sofas provide extra seating for guests too, and are inviting spots for an afternoon snooze! When one lounge isn't enough, a sizeable sofa allows for comfortable overspill from the main living room. Browse our generously sized, ultra comfortable 3-seater and 4-seater bespoke sofas. Bright and bold Spark joy with bright colour or deep jewel tones. Hot pink, resplendent ruby, and lime green shine as the sun spills in. Embracing green in particular echoes the nature present in your garden, harmoniously tying the look together by bringing the outside in. Who wouldn't feel joyous reclining on a decadent Chesterfield in this juicy shade of green? Floral and botanical prints Taking inspiration from the flowers in your garden might seem unoriginal, but dainty florals or bold, leafy designs create cohesion with the garden outside. You could opt for prints with citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, or limes to reference elegant European orangeries. Browse our Fabric Studio for print inspiration! Create a cosy book nook Make an awkward space charming with a comfy armchair and matching footstool. Sunny rooms are ideal places to while away an afternoon reading. Make the experience luxuriant with deep-filled seats and generous armrests. Just be prepared to compete with the cat for the best sun spot! Our Library Chair and Fireside Chair can be upholstered in a fabric of your choice. For extra comfort add a matching footstool! A tranquil home office Studies have proven the calming effects of nature. Instead of working from the cramped spare room, why not turn your spacious, light-filled conservatory into an inspiring home office? The plastic table and office chair are out; sink into a comfortable armchair instead and embrace blue-sky thinking with a peaceful view. Kendal and Cavendish are two of our favourite wing armchairs to use at a desk. If you need extra inspiration, our blog post on beautiful, alternative home office furniture is the guide for you. Remember the details Finally, don't forget to add texture with rugs, throws, scatter cushions. Spending extra care and attention will extend a conservatories use and means you can enjoy peaceful views and birdsong in elegance and comfort all summer and beyond. For final touches browse our homewares and soft furnishings. We hope our guide has given you plenty of conservatory ideas to consider! If you have more questions our FAQs below should help or get in touch! Our small team are passionate about interiors and always happy to help. Conservatory Furniture FAQs Can I put a normal sofa in a conservatory? Normal sofas can be put in a conservatory and won't fade provided you take care to minimise the upholstery's exposure to sunlight. Turning seat covers and cushions, treating furniture with sun protection, and installing laminated glass in your conservatory can all help minimise the effects of UV damage from the sun on your upholstery. Is rattan furniture suitable for a conservatory? Rattan is the original conservatory furniture. Rattan is found naturally in tropical climates which makes it perfect for hot, sunny rooms. Can you keep wooden furniture in a conservatory? Certain types of wood warp and fade in heat and harsh sunlight unless properly treated. Rattan and cane can withstand extreme sunlight better than other types of wood. However, these materials are considered old-fashioned. Opting for synthetic upholstery is one way to minimise sun damage to your furniture because man-made fibres are more resilient to heat than natural materials. Does leather fade in a conservatory? UV radiation from sunlight can cause leather to fade. However, placing your sofa in a shady part of the conservatory and utilising blinds will minimise sun damage. Regularly treating the leather will also help its condition. What is conservatory furniture made of? Traditionally, conservatory furniture is made from hard-wearing natural materials like cane and rattan. Today garden furniture comes in a range of styles, from chic grey sofas to rustic wood dining tables. Can I use my conservatory as a dining room? Conservatories make beautiful light-filled dining rooms where you can gather around the table with friends or enjoy a romantic sunset. Their warmth, light, and spaciousness make conservatories excellent dining spots, whether it's breakfast or dinner. How do you arrange furniture in a small conservatory? The best way to arrange furniture in a small conservatory is to be mindful of the space. Pick furniture with slim dimensions, avoid chunky sofas and tables or high-back chairs. Keep the floor free from clutter to create an impression of space and maximise the view outside.

The Best Sofas To Take A Nap On
We've always enjoyed the benefits of an afternoon power nap, long before working from home made it a necessity. That's why our sofas are so supremely snug! People want different things from their furniture, be it stylish looks, a place to entertain guests, or somewhere to cosy up with a glass of wine and a book, but one thing everyone can agree on is that a sofa must be comfortable. At the end of a long day, you want to be able to sink into your sofa and feel warm and relaxed. Now that 44% per cent of Brits work from home, a quick forty winks on the couch has never been more appealing. And if you're one of the 20% who takes regular naps you might be in the market for a sofa bed. To truly reap the benefits of a quick kip there are a few things to bear in mind when sofa shopping. Our guide will tell you what to look for and suggest the best sofa beds for a great afternoon's sleep. What to look for in a comfortable sofa bed Some people can sleep anywhere, but there's an art to napping in style. All you need to know is what to look for. A simple pull out sofa bed won't cut it. Sofa bed mattresses are notoriously uncomfortable because they're often made from cheap fabric and lack support. Often the sofa bed itself is built with low-quality materials, fairly thin fabrics, and the mattress topper is made from cheap foam. What makes sofa beds comfortable? In our opinion, a proper sofa with a classic design is a better spot for a nap. While fold out sofa beds offer convenience, they lack comfort. If you've ever tried one you'll know what mean: you feel every spring and coil and end up staring at the ceiling for hours! The popular click clack sofa beds might look good but if you struggle with back pain you'll want a sofa bed that offers proper cushioning and lumbar support. Fortunately, there are better options for daytime snoozing. Here's what to look for when searching for comfortable sofa beds. Sofa upholstery Sofa upholstery is one of the most important factors when it comes to choosing a "spare bed". Itchy or coarse fabric makes for an uncomfortable sleeping surface. You want a fabric that's touchably soft and inviting. On a cold winter's day, the best sofa bed will feel like a warm hug. If you struggle with sinusitis and allergies, then choosing a hypoallergenic fabric might also be a consideration. We've rounded up the best sofa bed fabric to sleep on (and ones to avoid): Velvet sofa beds Nowadays, lots of sofa beds come in velvet. But if a daytime snooze is a regular part of your routine, why not upholster your main sofa in velvet? We've waxed lyrical about the benefits of velvet before, but it's also a first-class material for sleepy heads: Velvet is a luxurious, inviting fabric that feels soft against your skin Velvet retains warmth, making it the perfect sleeping surface in winter when you need extra cosiness Velvet's vibrancy and depth of colour can help you tap into a relaxed state in order to nod off. Blue and green shades are conducive to sleep, so why not try dashing sapphire blue or calming green for your velvet sofa bed? Polyester blends are available that can make velvet an affordable sofa bed option Velvet is easy to keep clean with a simple brush or by using the light vacuum attachment. Keeping your sofa dust and pet hair free will make a daytime snooze more pleasant Cotton sofa bed You might be familiar with the benefits of cotton if you have cotton bedsheets or clothing, but it's also ideal for couches that double as sofa beds. Here's why: Cotton is ultra soft to sleep on Even the best sofa beds can feel thin and cheap if the manufacturer skimps on the material. With cotton, even blends add weight and body to the fabric which contributes to your sofa's snugness It's easy to clean and slip covers can be easily removed and washed Cotton might be the best choice in warmer climates due to its breathability Linen sofa bed Linen has long been a popular choice for duvets and bedsheets, so it stands to reason that it's also a great choice for sofa beds. Some positives of linen to consider: Its breathable qualities are suitable for those who struggle with allergies Again, linen's breathable nature makes it perfect for warm or humid environments Linen comes in a variety of patterns or colours so you can choose a shade that sends you to sleep Linen is airy, elegant, and easy to wash clean (keeping your sofa germ-free is important if you spend a lot of time sleeping on it) Fabrics to avoid Sometimes your first choice fabric won't make for the best sofa bed. Here are fabrics to steer clear of when it comes to sofa napping: Leather Quite simply, leather is cold! When it comes to retaining heat leather doesn't do as well as velvet or other soft fabrics In the summer leather doesn't fare much better. On a hot day, you might feel your skin 'stick' to the leather. There's nothing worse than having to groggily peel yourself off the sofa after a nap! Synthetic fabric Be aware that synthetic materials cause static. You don't want to be shocked out of your sweet dreams, do you? Synthetic fabric, while cheaper, isn't as durable as natural material. Often they'll feel thin and scratchy Synthetic fibres are less 'breathable' which isn't ideal if you have allergies or live in a humid area Cushioning is key to a comfortable sofa bed Your sofa bed is only as comfortable as the cushioning. The key elements you need to look for are: Spring down or foam feathers that provide a little give Cushions that mould to the contours of your body Traditional coil springs for support Seats with minimal spring back — you need to sink into your sofa for the best sleep At The Original Chair Company we design all our sofas with Qualofil fibre. Qualofil is a special type of fibre that keeps cushions and seats plump without flattening or collapsing. It means you can sink into your sofa for a quick kip and not worry about the seats or cushions getting crumpled or saggy over time. It feels much more luxuriant than your average pull out sofa bed. All our sofas are fitted with traditional coil springs as standard for superior comfort. A deep seat for a deeper sleep We should be getting 7-9 hours sleep every night, yet many of us struggle to get enough sleep. If you want to top on sleep during the day, a deep-seated sofa is a must. Shallows seat force a stiff posture and lead to cricks in your back and neck. A deep-seat on the other hand provides a cosy cave to curl up in with a blanket and some plump cushions. It's all about the arms Sofas with low arms are best for an afternoon nap. Many classic-style sofas offer this option, like a Howard Sofa. Low arms mean you comfortably rest your head and neck and avoid feeling stiff after forty winks. While it might be tempting to choose a sofa with plush, oversized arms, the angle you'd have to lay your head at to sleep will leave you feeling less than refreshed when you wake up. Try a large sofa or double bed sofa If you'd like your main living room seating to be nap-friendly, try a three seater sofa bed or corner sofa bed that gives you room to stretch out. Small sofas might not provide the best comfort if you need to hunch up to fit or your legs dangle over the seat. A corner sofa bed is a great space-saving option for smaller flats and maisonettes, but if you have spare room you'll reap the benefits of a large, roomy sofa. Double bed sofa options are another option if you need more space or like to snooze with your partner. Luxuriate on a chaise sofa A chaise sofa is the napping sofa. The chaise lounge can be traced to Ancient Egyptian nobility who used these types of sofa to recline in elegance and luxury. The chaise was designed to support the legs of the sitter - ideal if you want to drift off! Today comfortable chaise sofa beds come in a variety of styles and upholstery so you can find one to suit your taste and napping needs. A generous chaise sofa option (also known as a love seat) lets two people romantically cuddle up. What to avoid: If you want a blissful nap there are a few more things to avoid: Sofas with high backs and arms that don't give you spare room or allow your head an adequate rest Sharp edges Circular sofas. While ergonomic and sleek they don't provide the correct support for comfortable snoozing A flat sleeping surface isn't ideal so stay away from firm cushions that don't embrace your body. Chesterfield Sofas and Footstools: A Style Guide
Is there a more iconic piece of furniture than the Chesterfield sofa? Visit any stately home in Britain and you're bound to see Chesterfield footstools, sofas, and chairs. Designed in 18th century England, the Chesterfield has a rich and illustrious history. Named after Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, this iconic British design hasn't waned in popularity since its first outing. Perhaps the biggest change in Chesterfield furniture is its owners. Once the sofa style of the nobility and a fixture in manor houses and mansions, Chesterfield footstools and sofas now appear in modest, modern homes as a symbol of understated luxury and elegance. It's no surprise that this quintessentially British design is beloved by all. With its distinguished looks, a Chesterfield sofa is a statement piece that stands the test of time. Deep seating, hallmark tufting, and instantly recognisable rolled arms remain key features of Chesterfield furniture regardless of the upholstery. The fact that Chesterfields can be upholstered in a variety of fabrics, from rich burgundy leather to chic white linen without losing their grand sense of presence is one of the reasons why Chesterfields are so popular still, today. We predict that the Chesterfield sofa isn't going anywhere and will continue to be loved in homes for many years to come. Today we'll show you how to style and place Chesterfield sofas and footstools within your home, which fabrics work best with this iconic design, and where to find them. Luckily, you won't have to browse far as the Chesterfield is one of The Original Chair Company's most popular and enduring designs! Without further ado, let's look at how to make this statement piece of British design history your own. Where Should I Place the Chesterfield Sofa? First thing's first, where to place sofa or footstool? Here's a guide to help you decide. Refine your living room The most obvious place to put a Chesterfield sofa is in the living room. It's the perfect place to wow visiting guests and is used often by family. One of the great things about Chesterfield furniture is that they're designed to be lived on. Comfortable and durable, placing your new Chesterfield piece in a high-traffic room like the lounge will ensure it's part of the family. For maximum impact centre sofas against the biggest wall and position armchairs and footstools around it. This configuration creates a sense of sophisticated grandeur while also being practical. In your 'library' You don't need to live in Highclere Castle to own a library. Any cosy nook can be transformed into a book lover's haven with some shelves and a Chesterfield armchair. Position your armchair at an angle within the nook so that shelves are within arm's reach. You'll find the Chesterfield's arm rest is generous enough to balance a cup of tea (or glass of wine!) to truly get into the book club spirit. Layer up with contrasting cushions and a cosy blanket to complete the look. A Chesterfield footstool is the perfect companion for deep-seated, tufted armchairs and makes bingeing the latest bestseller a luxurious experience. An inspiring study In the past, it might have been considered grand to have a separate study in the home. Post-pandemic things have changed and many are looking for ways to spruce up their bland home office. A Chesterfield sofa in the study brings to mind illustrious professors and adds decadence to an otherwise functional room. It's also the perfect spot for an afternoon nap! Depending on the size of your study, you could fit a two-seater sofa or scale back with an armchair. Whichever style you choose, you can be certain that a Chesterfield will look at home in your study. In the master bedroom Your bedroom is your home's sanctuary. It's a place to sleep but also a room where you can escape the hubbub of the house and spend a quiet hour reading or relaxing. Placing a Chesterfield sofa and matching stool in the master bedroom provides extra space to unwind. You can match the upholstery to your bed linen and place the sofa at the foot of the bed or along the biggest wall to create a tranquil focal point. Drape your best dressing gown over the rolled arm and pair it with a footstool so you can put your feet up after a long day. In the conservatory Putting a Chesterfield sofa or armchair in the conservatory sounds strange, but you'd be surprised at how this British icon elevates an ordinary sunroom. Adding a leather Chesterfield to your conservatory extends your living space and provides extra seating for guests. Be sure to have the fabric treated to prevent it from fading in the sunlight. There are more conservatory furniture options than you'd think, and the stately Chesterfield is just one example of how getting creative can bring more personality and sophistication to your home. How do I choose the right fabric for my Chesterfield Sofa? When we say 'Chesterfield' the first image that springs to mind is probably a deep-buttoned sofa with rolled arms upholstered in oxblood leather or bottle green. The traditional look is a timeless classic. However, today you can upholster your sofa or armchair in any fabric or colour you wish. When it comes to picking the right fabric for your Chesterfield there are options galore, which can make picking overwhelming. Our guide will point in you the right direction of which fabric will best suit your room's aesthetic and which is most practical for your daily lifestyle. Leather Chesterfield It's for good reason that leather is a stalwart fabric when it comes to Chesterfields. Leather is durable and stain resistant, so can stand up to high use. It's ideal for families with young children and pets, where spills and stains might be more common. Today you can upholster your sofa, armchair, or footstool in sustainable faux leather, which always holds up well against the sun. If you're looking to recreate a classic vibe then you can't go wrong with a Chesterfield upholstered in striking oxblood red. Chesterfield Armchair in Cotton If your decor is minimal or incorporates natural elements (or you favour neutral colours) then cotton is a fabulous option. Cotton is a breathable fabric that helps keep you cool in summer and cosy in winter. What's more, cotton is a natural fabric which makes it hardwearing and less likely to stain. Nowadays cotton can be the more sustainable option with recycled materials every bit as durable and good-looking as the original. Cotton in classic white will add an airy touch to contemporary living spaces and is a surprising but chic contrast to the Chesterfield's manly image. Linen Chesterfield Like cotton, linen is a natural fabric that's durable and stain-resistent. Furthermore, it's supremely comfortable. A striped linen sofa looks beautiful in the Chesterfield style; it strikes the perfect balance between relaxed and traditional. Of course, you can pick from a variety of colours. That's why linen is a go-to in many interiors. Sophisticated and stylish, linen's simplicity emphasises the supreme craftsmanship that goes into making a Chesterfield sofa or chair. If you want to show off your statement furniture to its best advantage while keeping practicalities in mind, you can't go wrong with linen. Velvet Chesterfield Velvet sofas are having a moment. Thankfully, it's a fabric that never truly goes out of style. Velvet is soft to the touch, feels luxuriant, and exudes charm and beauty. Velvet is also more practical than you might think. A simple brush and hoover will keep your velvet Chesterfield in pristine condition. Robing this classic design in sumptuous velvet has never been easier with a range of colours and designs available, from dusky hues to glittering jewel tones. Whether it's a decadent boudoir or chic and sophisticated study, velvet and Chesterfields are a perfect match. How To Style Chesterfield Furniture Now that you know where to put your Chesterfield sofa and footstool and what fabric to upholster them in, it's time to style. This is where everything comes together. It's important to pay attention to small details like styling otherwise the impact of your grand furniture might be lost. Give your Chesterfield pieces the attention they deserve with considerate styling. Moody and masculine This is office chic circa the 1700s. Take your Chesterfield footstool or chair back to its roots as the focal point of gentleman's clubs and smoky studies. Leather is the only choice for this look. Sticking to neutral tones like tan or dark brown will be in keeping with the masculine look. Bottlegreen and burgundy are two other classic options if you want to add colour without spoiling the moody aesthetic. Dark wood castors ground the piece in subtle elegance and craftsmanship. Dark walls and an array of floor and desk lamps will create a brooding atmosphere that'll inspire you to light a cigar and open the port. In fact, a drinks trolley with vintage glassware would make perfect additions to your very own gentleman's club. Feminine charm In contrast to masculine leather, upholster a Chesterfield footstool or chair in sumptuous velvet for alluring elegance. Dusky pinks and powder blues add a touch of feminine charm, recalling Parisian boudoirs. Match to bed linen or curtains in a bedroom for a cohesive look that envelops you in softness. Accessories like sheepskin rugs, silky cushions, and floral wallpaper add to the opulence. Cool and contemporary If sleek and chic is your style, you can't go wrong with a Chesterfield in cool black. The surrounding lines should be clean and the accessories minimal to showcase your sofa to its best advantage. Think chrome finishes on the lamps and picture frames, or reflective metal vases. A bold burst of colour is permitted with cushions or freshly cut flowers. Scandi chic Scandinavian-style interiors aren't going away. A good thing in our opinion! It's so easy to create an inviting and cosy yet contemporary space with a grey Chesterfield sofa upholstered in linen. Plush two-seaters offer generous seating for big families. Place opposite the fireplace to bring more hygge into your living room. Scandi style is all about balance, so if you're considering an armchair then get a matching pair. Bonus points if you opt for Chesterfield footstools to match! Finally, rustic but sleek wooden textures throughout and a touch of greenery from potted plants will bring the space together. For all its traditional roots, Chesterfields are surprisingly versatile! Take it to the max(imalist) Not one to shy away from bold statements? How about a magnificent, midnight blue Chesterfield sofa? Or a lime green footstool and armchair combo? Thanks to their classic design, Chesterfields look great dressed up or dressed down. The sky's the limit when it comes to bold colours and patterns. Place your Chesterfield in front of a feature wall for a bold, eclectic look or set up matching Chesterfield chairs and footstools in canary yellow against a navy wall to make your feature furniture pop. No matter how bold and bright, a Chesterfield's classic design will always look elegant. How To Balance Retro Interiors Like A Designer
If you love a retro interior, how do you strike the perfect balance? In our experience, retro is a tricky trend to get right. You’re aiming to create a sense of nostalgia and eclecticism while keeping your room intentional and elegant. It’s a fine line between a quirky nod to the recent past and risking your room looking tired and outdated. Retro interiors combine modern and retro elements in a vibrant and fresh juxtaposition. Funky fabric, timeless furniture design, and quirky styling should surprise and delight guests, rather than jolt them straight into the 70s. What is the retro interior style? Retro isn’t the same as vintage. To be classed as vintage, an item or piece of furniture has to be at least 20 years old. Retro imitates styles from the near-past, but isn’t actually old. The iconic Murano mushroom lamps, Smeg fridge, and Ultrafragola mirrors are some examples. The fact that retro items are new can help you to avoid your home looking tired and dated due to too many vintage pieces. The history behind retro decor The main eras retro interiors take inspiration from are the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. This style took off in the post-war decades, embodying a sense of freedom and rebelliousness. Think curved shapes reminiscent of boho, hippy waves and the bold, funky patterns of the swinging 60s that channel individuality and break away from the restrictions of the past. It’s no surprise that this trend is having a revival in the post-lockdown era! What is ‘retro’ furniture? Organic textures and curved, fluid shapes are key to the retro look. Two of the most popular retro chairs, the Ercol chair and the Egg chair, are instantly recognisable due to their fluid shape. Mid-century furniture is another cornerstone of this interior style: solid, sturdy, and made from natural materials, the Mid-century trend is built to last. Finding a timeless coffee table, sofa, or set of matching armchairs is one easy way to bring retro nostalgia to a room scheme - picking just one of these pieces will ensure balance. In fact, you don’t need to go all out to embrace this trend. Rooms should feel personal and tell a story about the people who live in them. Luckily, retro designs easily combine with modern interior styles to prevent you from feeling stuck in an old-fashioned rut. To create a warm, nostalgic, lived-in space that looks timeless instead of dated, there are a few rules to follow. Tips on creating a balanced retro interior 1. Picking the right colour palette The retro colour palette is warm and saturated. There’s an earthy element with terracotta, avocado, and mustard being popular tones. With such a bold palette, there’s a risk that your interior could look kitschy instead of intentionally quirky. We recommend introducing a splash of saturation via soft furnishings or an accent chair, particularly if your style is on the reserved side. Remember that balance is key to a sophisticated, modern take on this trend, so complement your retro furniture with warm neutrals like beige, sand, taupe, and fawn and choose warm wood and bronze finishes. 2. Clear the clutter This is a tip we’ve given many times, but it bears repeating. Nothing will dampen your retro interior quicker than clutter. Due to the distinctive furniture style and saturated colour palette, a cluttered space will quickly feel chaotic. Curate a calm, clear backdrop so that the eye is harmoniously drawn to a sofa’s curved back or the honeyed finish of a Mid-century modern coffee table. A messy space will have a jarring effect visually. Create a sense of spaciousness by choosing your furniture accordingly - sometimes two armchairs with matching footstools will look less cluttered in a small room than an oversized sofa. 3. Carefully curate retro and modern Introducing modern elements can prevent a retro room feeling stuck in the past, however it’s important to blend the old and new intentionally. One way to do this is to invest in high quality furniture inspired by the past, rather than buying true vintage pieces. Vintage is beautiful, but it can also look tired and shabby. Unless you want to spend a lot of time or money reupholstering, furniture inspired by classic designs is a better option. Think about form and function in order to strike the right balance that makes your space habitable but beautiful. Play with curves and straight lines, and limit vintage pieces to 1–2 items to avoid overwhelm. Your new sofa or armchair can look the part, but picking pieces built by artisan craftspeople with modern comforts like coil-sprung seats and adequate cushioning and support built in ensures that your furniture will last a lifetime. Fortunately, this is where The Original Chair Company excels! 4. Find balance Following on from our previous point, try to create a visual balance between old and new. For example, don’t group all your retro pieces in one place. Spreading them evenly throughout your space will create nostalgic touches for the eye to linger on and allows the ‘story’ of a room to gradually unfold. Inherited a fabulous Mid-century modern piece of furniture? Try sourcing one other piece from this era to tie everything in. Wavy mirrors and curved candles are another way to replicate the organic curves in your retro sofa or armchair. 5. Create cohesion with colour When mixing old and new furniture, it can be hard to blend different styles together. Another way to unify a space and bring balance is through colour. For example, you can upholster a retro accent chair in a funky colour, then tastefully replicate this shade throughout your interior. Cushions, picture frames, and window treatments can all help to create a sense of cohesion. Using colour deliberately is a handy shortcut to creating a quirky, eclectic interior that looks sophisticated, intentional, and harmonious. Furthermore, you can ensure that the wooden elements and metal finishes on your furniture are in the same warm colour palette. This will unite your furniture into a harmonious look, even if the pieces come from different decades. 6. Use textures and layering Woven rugs, rattan chairs, lush houseplants - natural textures dominate the retro look. But how can you introduce these elements while keeping your space fresh and modern? The key is to layer. Handmade embellished cushions, faux fur rugs and cushions, or a silky blanket can add varying degrees of texture to your space. Like with colour, the key is to pick a few textures and replicate them through the room. For example, a curved sofa upholstered in linen could be echoed in a rounded, linen lampshade. Natural textures like leather are relaxed and sophisticated - try pairing an armchair in warm cognac or tan with a matching footstool for a cohesive look that’s bold but far from chaotic. Geometric patterns When we think of retro interiors, one of the first things that springs to mind is bold geometric patterns. Whether it's wallpaper, curtains, or upholstery, a striking pattern is just the thing to offset the smooth, fluid lines present in retro furniture. If you prefer something more subtle, parquet flooring checks the geometric box while looking sophisticatedly understated. Pattern is yet another way to layer and build texture within a room. Like with colour, repeating patterns throughout a room will bring cohesion. Paying attention to pattern is another reason to choose bespoke furniture, as you’ll be able to customise your new sofa or chairs in any pattern you please. Our Fabric Studio offers hundreds of inspiring retro fabrics from names like Liberty and Harlequin. Arundel Sofa Arundel is customisable down to the castors, so you can choose whichever wood or metal finish suits your colour scheme best. How To Choose The Perfect Accent Chair
Need a functional chair that’s far from boring? Quirky accent chairs are a chic, stylish way to add colour and flair your home without even trying. Whether it’s the bedroom, living room, or dining area, follow our guide for tips on how to choose the best accent chair to elevate your living space. What is an accent chair? Accent chairs are decorative chairs designed to create visual impact. Often single seats, accent chairs provide additional seating in a room although their main function is to create a funky focal point that adds impact to a room. Accent chairs are versatile! Their varied designs, materials, colours, and patterns mean that there’s a perfect accent chair for every room scheme. Place an accent chair in any part of your house that needs a ‘visual lift’, including hallways and dining areas. Accent chairs are often used to create a quirky contrast or pop of colour. Think lime green velvet against moody grey. However, thanks to the variety of accent chair styles and materials available you can still make a statement with a minimal accent chair. Scandi style, for example, often pairs striking mid-century chairs in charcoal or midnight-black to pair with natural-toned rooms. Careful consideration is needed before buying an accent chair. The impact might be lost if your quirky accent chair blends too much with your decor, and there’s always the danger of an accent chair looking garish instead of intentional. That’s why we’ve created this guide to help you choose the perfect accent chair for your room. How a quirky accent chair transforms your room Provide a focal point In any room we recommend placing 2-3 “statement pieces” that draw the eye and say something about the story of the room. You can do this with mirrors, artwork, and of course, a quirky chair. Accent chairs are the easiest way to make a statement within a room. Simply pick an exciting pattern, vibrant colour, or eye-catching style to add more excitement to a flat space. Remember to keep an element of cohesion to your statement pieces to avoid unintentional clashing. For example, the fuschia colour of an accent chair could be repeated in bed linen or candles. Layer up on texture Accent chairs come in a wide range of fabric. Everything from leather, velvet, cotton, and other natural materials like linen is possible. The abundant textures available mean it’s easy to add depth to a room. You can add cushions for extra colour and visual interest, or leave bare to draw the eye to the plush material, quirky pattern, or interesting shape of your chair. A splash of colour Enliven a neutral room scheme with a colourful accent chair. Neutral decor looks chic and timeless, however sometimes plain walls and carpet can become bland. Adding a splash of a vibrant shade will lift the room. And add a flash of personality. Colour doesn’t have to be jewel-toned; a dusky pink accent chair against cream walls makes a beautiful, chic statement. What are the different types of accent chairs? There are several types of accent chairs, and each one brings a different atmosphere to a room. Here are the most common: Armchair Armchairs can be used as accent chairs, particularly ones that come in an eye-catching design or are upholstered in a funky pattern. Traditionally, armchairs matched the fabric and design of the sofa, but here they should contrast in order to create a visual statement. Browse our armchairs. Slipper Chair A slipper chair sits low to the ground and lacks arms. They usually come with a high back and were designed during the Victorian era as a place for ladies to sit while putting on their slippers. This makes them an ideal accent chair for a bedroom where space might be limited. Browse bedroom chairs. Wingback Chair The Wingback is a classic chair that’s been around since the 17th century. Traditional wingback chairs were upholstered in velvet but now they come in an array of funky fabrics and patterns. Elegant and timeless, a wingback chair makes a striking statement in spacious living rooms. Browse our Wingback chairs. Chaise Longue Love to lounge? Then the chaise longue is the accent chair for you. These accent chairs have a long pedigree and were often seen as symbols of luxury. The chaise is as functional as it is beautiful; you can sit and recline on it in addition to creating a chic focal point for your room. Browse our Chaise Longue collection. Tub Chair Tub chairs or ‘bucket chairs’ are a popular guest bedroom choice. Their rounded shape and low, curved back creates an inviting space to sink into. Modern and minimal, tub chairs are ideal for smaller space or to create a comfy ‘zone’ in hallways. Browse our tub chairs. Where to put an accent chair Accent chairs can be placed anywhere within your home! Try them in your: Living room Master bedroom Guest rooms Hallway Study or home office Dining Room If you have a large living room or bedroom we recommend two accent chairs side by side for maximum impact. Accent chairs come into their own when entertaining guests or simply as a comfy, chic spot to perch while tying your shoelaces. Typically, our customers create cosy nooks by placing a wingback accent chair next to a fireplace or bookcase, or pairing them with an ottoman or footstool. Create cohesion and drama where a room feels flat - usually a quirky accent chair is the final touch that pulls everything together. Choosing the right colour for your accent chair The perfect colour for your new accent chair will depend on your room’s existing colour scheme. The point of an accent chair is to draw the eye to a particular area in your room, and you can use colour to achieve this in a number of ways. There are an almost infinite number of shades, so picking the perfect colour can feel overwhelming. To narrow it down try keeping the 4 main colour attributes in mind: Warm vs. Cool Is your existing room scheme warm or cool? Knowing the ‘temperature’ of your room can help when picking a chair as you can either match the existing warmth in the room or pick a cool shade to make your accent chair stand out. Warm colours have red undertones. Think orange, yellow, olive green, burgundy, beige, and cream. Even grey can have a warm undertone. Cool colours, on the other hand, contain blue undertones. Blue, purple, pink, violet, and stark black and white are all examples of cool colours. In truth, any colour can be warm or cool depending on the undertone. Mixing warm and cool within one space is a clever way to achieve balance. For example, navy blue chairs against a warm cream wall. You can also play around with wood accents (warm) and chrome finishes (cool) to warm up or cool down a room. Tonal Tonal looks aren’t limited to the fashion world, they can be applied to interiors, too. Tonal or ‘monochromatic’ interiors are harmonious and relaxing — at the same time they can make quite a statement! In essence, a tonal colour scheme utilises various shades of the one hue. Take red for example. Within that colour palette you have a variety of shades: cherry red, rich burgundy, deep maroon, bright berry, and dusty rose to name a few. In terms of picking a quirky accent chair, choosing the deepest or brightest shade in your chosen palette will draw the eye. You could also determine the dominant colour in your palette then go a shade lighter or darker for the accent chair to create cohesion. Contrast Contrast refers to the luminosity of colours. Colours can be high or low contrast depending where they sit on the colour wheel. High contrast colours sit opposite one another on the colour wheel, while low contrast colours will be found side by side. There’s no right wrong; whether you prefer high or low contrast is personal preference. However, placing a dark coloured accent chair against a light wall will create more visual impact. For example, a mustard armchair against a dark navy wall. Saturation Saturation refers to the intensity of a colour. High saturation colours appear more intense and vibrant, while low saturation colours appear paler, perhaps even washed out. Picking a highly saturated colour for your accent chair will make a bold impression. You just have to be careful how the other elements of the room come into play — you’re aiming for rich and vivid, not garish. Patterns Colour isn’t the only way to have fun with an accent chair. Introducing a pattern via your chair’s upholstery can introduce a bold, quirky element to your room without going overboard. You can pick from a variety of patterns depending on your taste: Geometric Floral Stripes Polka dot Damask Paisley Introducing patterns with an accent chair is a great way to add personality to neutral room schemes. And for lovers of maximalism the lure of a funky accent chair will be irresistible! Material One more consideration before buying an accent chair is the material. Different materials perform better in terms of durability, and from an aesthetic point of view, upholstery texture adds layers to a room scheme. What material you pick depends on your lifestyle and personal taste. Here are a few to consider: Leather. Classic and easy to clean, a leather accent chair screams luxury. Leather chairs in caramel and cognac shades look refined in tonal room schemes and can be made with tufting to create an aged, vintage look. Velvet. More durable than you’d think, velvet is the accent chair. It feels luxuriant and comes in a variety colours, though we think it shines brightest in highly saturated jewel tones! Cotton. Cotton is durable and easy to clean. It looks great in neutral colours like white and grey, and the natural weave will look harmonious in organic-inspired rooms. Wood. The warm, inviting texture of wood is perfect for accent chairs designed for curling up in by the fire. Mahogany gives a masculine edge while honey-toned wood will go with a neutral, natural room scheme. Metal. Metal feels colder than wood but works exceptionally well in contemporary dining rooms and living spaces. Introducing metal via chrome castors on your accent chairs will help create a modern, sleek look. Our favourite accent chairs We’re not called The Original Chair Company for nothing! How To Style And Care For Leather Furniture
What’s not to love about a leather sofa? Versatile and durable, leather can look effortlessly elegant or comfortable and homey depending on your style. Any piece of furniture gets a luxurious twist when upholstered in leather, so if an entire sofa is too much for your taste you can opt for a plush armchair or decadent headboard. Modern leather comes in a variety of shades: autumnal conker, deep burgundy, opulent black, rich caramel…the list is endless. If you decide on bespoke leather furniture then your options are even wider as you can opt for classic or contemporary shapes to suit your space. Leather furniture adds depth and character to a room. A sofa can ground spacious living rooms while a strategically placed leather armchair will provide a dramatic accent. Even better, leather sofas and armchairs are easy to style with decorative cushions and throws. But the quality we love most about leather is its ability to tell a story. Over the years, genuine leather takes on a gorgeous patina that looks lived-in and inviting. A leather sofa or chair could be in your family for decades, providing comfort and stability throughout life’s many changes and experiences. If you’re considering leather furniture for your home, our guide will help you decide. How To Style Luxurious Leather 1. Chic SoHo Apartment Emulate the style and sophistication of the city that never sleeps with a chunky, square-shaped leather sofa. Deep-filled seats and generous arms offer plenty of space to unwind while clean, geometric lines keep the shape from looking slouchy. Luscious caramel or tobacco tones will add to the effortlessly chic vibe you see in SoHo lofts or bohemian and artsy Greenwich Village. Leather sofas don’t need to be domineering — two-seaters work beautifully in small spaces, bringing depth and drama to loft conversions and studio flats. Shop bespoke furniture. 2. Leather headboard Time to think outside the box! A dramatic, padded leather headboard creates a striking feature in a master bedroom. Leather has always had an edgy reputation (think motorcycle jackets) but you can easily soften the rebellious overtone by choosing a colour other than black. A dark chocolate leather headboard against neutral walls will provide an organic, grounded atmosphere that’s conducive to a cosy night’s rest. Plus, you can tailor the details to suit your personal taste — from tufting and nail trim to a geometric or curved design. Sleek and easy to clean, a leather headboard will elevate any bedroom into a stylish and inviting space to relax in. Here are 15 Beautiful Headboard Ideas to inspire you. Shop headboards. 3. Vintage leather Capture a bohemian, vintage vibe with a leather sofa. You don’t necessarily need to buy an old, beat-up couch to get the Greenwich Village artist look — bespoke sofas come in a variety of styles and look every bit as chic as the original. Choose a colour scheme that brings warmth to the room and style with natural fabrics like a woven throw or faux fur scatter cushions. Adding greenery in the form of potted plants will work harmoniously and help to create a creative, inspiring atmosphere. Shop accessories. 4. A country classic The Chesterfield sofa is the epitome of the country classic style. Instantly recogniseable by its oversized, rolled arms that are the same height as the sofa’s back, the Chesterfield is a design that’s been around for centuries. If you love the country classic style we suggest picking a sofa in a traditional shape to bring a timeless, authentic quality to your space. Other classic designs found in stately homes are Wingback Chairs and Stowe Knowle. Durable and enduring, a leather sofa in a classic design is an heirloom piece that never goes out of style. Shop classic sofa shapes. 5. Leather furniture for apartments and tiny homes There has been a trend in recent years for ‘tiny homes’ as more people opt for minimal, hassle-free living. When it comes to living small, you need to be creative and mindful with your interiors. Maximising space is the aim of the game. A leather ottoman is ideal for apartment or tiny home living because it saves space, can be used as storage, and doubles up as extra seating. Not to mention that an ottoman upholstered in buttery leather looks incredibly chic! In small apartments and homes clutter can quickly become overwhelming. Keeping your essentials stowed away in a beautiful blanket box or ottoman is the perfect solution. Shop Ottomans. 6. Back to black If warm tones aren’t your style, you can’t go wrong with cool and contemporary black. When styled correctly, a black leather sofa can tie a room together or become an eye-catching focal point. Metallic accents like copper are a modern, stylish complement to black, especially when paired with a jewel-toned wall. Another option is to introduce contrast with feminine touches, like floral wallpaper or velvet pink scatter cushions. Whichever style you choose, know that a leather sofa doesn’t have to be styled like it belongs in a gentleman’s club! Shop Contemporary Styles. 7. Refined Leather Dining Chairs Leather isn’t just for the living room. A set of barstools in cognac-coloured leather oozes sophistication and can ground a bright, airy dining room. Real leather brings decadence to dining, the final opulent touch in a room scheme that’s both luxurious and cosy. Shop leather dining chairs. 8. An Opulent Home Office Let’s be honest, computer chairs are not things of beauty. If you’ve given your home office a makeover you might feel loath to return that ugly desk chair back to its usual spot. Fortunately, bespoke leather furniture offers all the comfort and back support of a regular desk chair while looking a hundred times more stylish. Whether you opt for chic black, forest green, or an earthy tan, it’s time to give your newly styled home office the centerpiece it deserves. If you can’t decide which style to pick, we wrote a blog all about the perfect, bespoke desk chair. Shop Leather Chairs. 9. Luxuriant Leather Accent Chair A leather accent chair can provide an eye-catching contrast to the rest of your living room. If your sofa is velvet or linen, for example, up the contrast with an armchair upholstered in cool leather and clean lines. The key is to be intentional with opposing textures and tones like a neutral sofa paired with a brightly vibrant chair. Use accent chairs to draw focus to a particular area of the room, like a bookcase or corner nook, which will help the eye ‘flow’ around a room and notice beautiful details. Shop Leather Armchairs. 10. Decadent Sectional Sofa An oversized sofa in opulent leather is the ultimate luxury. It’s also the perfect choice for bigger families as leather is an incredibly hard wearing material. It’s also easy to wipe clean, so you don’t need to worry about children or pets accidentally damaging your new leather sofa. Most traditional leather sofas are dark in colour, which can feel overwhelming. Lighten things up with cream cushions in touchably soft cotton or a snowy-white throw. We recommend placing your sectional leather sofa away from the walls to create a cosy ‘zone’ in the heart of your living room. Cosy film nights become extra indulgent when you have ample room to repose! Shop Leather Sectional Sofas. Caring For Your Leather Furniture Real leather requires proper care to ensure it looks its best. Luckily, it’s very easy to keep leather looking luxurious. A regular spot clean is often all that’s needed, plus modern leather is less likely to sag or rip, meaning you can enjoy your leather sofa for many years to come. Our handy guide below will help you take proper care of your leather furniture. How To Care For Leather Furniture There are three simple steps to caring for leather furniture: Hoovering Wiping with a microfibre cloth Treating with a leather conditioner Hoovering Start by hoovering your sofa to remove any dust or hair. You’ll get the best results by using the brush attachment. Lightly run the attachment across the surface of your leather sofa and angle the brush into the corners where crumbs or dust might have gathered. If your sofa rests against a wall don’t forget to pull the sofa out and hoover the back. It’s also a good idea to remove the seat cushions if possible to clean the undersides. Using a microfibre cloth Thankfully, leather is non-porous and much easier to clean than other sofa types. For this step you need to be aware of what type of leather you’re cleaning. There are two types and both react to water differently. Unprotected leather. Sometimes called ‘unfinished’ leather, unprotected leather feels ultra soft and buttery. The natural texture of the leather is more visible because the material hasn’t been treated. It’s the highest quality leather, however, it’s also more prone to scratches and stains and doesn’t tolerate water as easily, so you must treat it gently. Protected leather. As the name suggests, protected leather has been treated with a top coat to make it more durable. This type of leather is easy to clean and holds up to hard use. The downside is that protected or ‘pigmented’ leather isn’t as soft to the touch. Always check the label or with the manufacturer to know which leather type you’re cleaning. If it’s unprotected leather simply wipe down with a microfibre cloth to remove dust and dirt. For protected leather create a solution of three parts water and one part mild washing-up liquid. Wipe the surface with a lightly damp microfibre towel, being careful not to get the leather too wet. Finally, dry your sofa with a different dry towel. Protecting with a leather conditioner This final step will only need to be taken once every 6-12 months. Just like our own skin needs looking after, leather is a natural material that benefits from moisturising. Without regular conditioning the fibres in the leather will loosen and crack. When purchasing a leather conditioner check the ingredients and avoid conditioners that contain wax or silicones. Leather protectants can also help repel liquid, therefore can be applied when spills and stains occur. Ensure your sofa stays soft and sleek by applying a leather conditioner once or twice per year. The above steps can be applied to all leather furniture. The lifespan of a leather sofa There’s no reason why leather furniture can’t last decades with good care. Protected leather is a hardy material that can withstand a lot of use, making it perfect for families or those who entertain guests regularly. Even unprotected leather will last many years with the correct care. One of the most beautiful aspects of leather is that it ages over time, taking on a glorious patina that tells the story of its use. Tell a Visual StoryWeave a cohesive narrative throughout your room scheme with a specific pattern and colour palette. Determine these elements early to create visual harmony. Warm tones are relaxed and cosy while cool greys and bright white feel modern and refined. To tell a story with pattern you might opt for stripes that remind you of Riviera holidays or leafy prints that evoke a love of the outdoors.Don’t be afraid to mix and match – or even artfully clash. Combining different fabrics and patterns will add layers to your story. Consider Fabric TextureJane Churchill textured fabrics are a lovely way to add depth to a room. Velvet adds luxury and softness, perhaps even a touch of decadence. Meanwhile, linen's natural texture recalls outdoor adventures. The key to working with different textures is layers. Pairing an upholstered accent chair in a soft fabric with a leather sofa adds visual interest and complexity to your story. Care and Maintenance of Jane Churchill Fabrics We have a few tips to help preserve your Jane Churchill fabrics. Fabric care and regular maintenance are key if you want to prevent your upholstery from growing shabby in a few years. Velvet Vacuuming. Use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment to remove dust and debris. Vacuum in the direction of the pile to avoid damaging the fabric. Brushing. Use a soft-bristled brush to gently brush the velvet in the direction of the pile. This helps to keep the fabric looking fresh and free from crushed fibers. Avoid Direct Sunlight. Keep velvet upholstery out of direct sunlight to prevent fading. Use curtains or blinds to shield the furniture from intense light. Blotting. If a spill occurs, blot the area immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Avoid rubbing, as this can push the liquid deeper into the fibers and cause damage. Spot Cleaning. Mix a small amount of mild detergent with water to create a gentle cleaning solution. Dampen a cloth with the solution and gently blot the stained area. Follow up by blotting with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue then allow the area to air dry completely. Rotate cushions. Flip cushions regularly to ensure even wear and prevent crushing of the fabric. Cotton Some of the steps to care for cotton are similar to velvet but with a few key differences. Vacuum. Use an upholstery attachment once per week to remove dust and debris. Blot Spills Immediately. Act fast if you spill tea – or red wine! – on cotton. Like velvet, use a clean, dry cloth to absorb liquids and avoid rubbing. Spot Clean. You can also spot clean cotton with a mix of mild detergent with water. Dab the solution onto stains, then blot with a damp cloth to rinse. Air dry completely. Professional Cleaning. We recommend a deep clean by a professional at least once per year to keep your upholstery looking gorgeous. For cleaning at home a steam cleaner is a great way to keep your sofa or chair in like-new condition. Just remember to test a hidden patch first. Use Fabric Protector. Apply a protector to repel stains. Rotate Cushions. Regularly rotate and flip cushions to ensure even wear. Use Covers. Protect with washable throws or slipcovers. Linen Linen is a beautiful fabric that softens over time. Its natural look is a great choice for adding texture to a room. Linen is a durable fabric but it does require some special care. In addition to all the tips above we recommend washing covers at 30 degrees or less on a slow spin cycle. A slow spin prevents the material from shrinking. Remove covers from the machine immediately when the cycle is done to stop creasing and hang them over a clothes horse. Try not to use pegs as these will mark the linen. Stubborn creases can be removed with a warm iron or steamer. As a final tip be sure to wash all the covers to maintain colour consistency and keep your linen bright. Stylish and Functional Radiator Covers An overlooked design element in most homes, luxurious interiors included, is radiator covers. Here are our stylish radiator cover ideas and why they make a difference to your home. Radiate beauty Stylish radiator covers come in a variety of designs and can often be customised to your taste. From sleek and modern to ornate and decadent it's easy to see how radiator covers can add another layer of beauty to your home. Functional radiator covers serve as a finishing touch, neatly concealing ugly radiators to create a cohesive and polished finishing touch to your home decor. They come in a range of materials from wood, metal, and MDF to suit every style and budget. Functional aesthetics Functional radiator covers double as shelves or additional surface space, which gives you more space to display decorative items like plants or books, enhancing the room's functionality and aesthetic. Where space is tight, stylish radiator covers offer a practical way to double up on beauty and function. From a practical point of view, functional radiator covers help to prevent accidental burns, especially in households with children or pets, making your home safer and more comfortable to live in. Create the illusion of space Tired of bulky, awkward radiators upsetting visual harmony in a room? A stylish radiator cover creates a more streamlined and spacious appearance. Whether your style is minimalist or maximalist, clean and organised spaces look more luxuriant. There are plenty of radiator cover ideas out there so they can blend in with existing furniture to create an illusion of space and visual harmony. Extra perks of radiator covers Radiator covers can help muffle noises from the radiator, creating a quieter and more serene environment. True luxury is having peace to relax in. Another functional benefit of radiator covers is that they help improve the flow of warm air into the room by directing heat outwards instead of up, a particular benefit in period properties. The Impact of Lighting on Home Decor One of our top tips is never underestimate the impact of lighting. Thoughtful home lighting makes a significant difference to the comfort and atmosphere of a room all while enhancing aesthetic appeal. Here are our favourite lighting tips. Spotlight features Draw attention to unique architectural features and intricate details with decorative lighting. For example, accent lighting can showcase high ceilings, moldings, staircases, windows — even an antique bookcase. Create ambiance The right home lighting can transform the atmosphere, making it feel warm, inviting, romantic, energetic, or serene. The first thing to consider is temperature. Warm light (2700K-3000K) creates a cozy, inviting atmosphere, perfect for living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas while cool light (3500K-4100K) provides a bright, energetic feel, suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, and workspaces. Using dimmer switches means you can control the intensity of your home lighting depending on what mood you wish to create. Light fixtures and styles Choose light fixtures based on your personal style. Chandeliers add elegance and grandeur, often serving as a focal point in dining rooms or entryways. Pendant lights provide targeted illumination and visual interest, commonly used over kitchen islands or dining tables while recessed lighting offers a clean, unobtrusive look, providing subtle yet effective decorative lighting. Finally, remember table and floor lamps which help create a layered lighting scheme with functional and decorative benefits. Choosing the Perfect Curtain Poles Choosing curtain poles requires several considerations like material, finish, and proportion. Metals like brass, chrome, stainless steel, and wrought iron are popular for their durability and timeless look. If your room scheme takes inspiration from nature then wooden curtain poles make sense and can be stained to match existing furniture. Decorative curtain poles can be fluted or carved with ornate finials to suit traditional interiors and period homes or sleek and minimalistic for a contemporary look. Finally, you need to consider proportion. High ceilings can accommodate thicker and more decorative curtain poles and you should ensure that the pole extends beyond the window frame by 10-20 cm on each side to allow the curtains to be fully drawn back. Rooms always appear larger when you maximise natural light and choosing the right curtain pole helps. Creative Magazine Stacks and Storage Solutions Luxuriant spaces are always clutter free. Creative magazine storage keeps your reading material in order while enhancing the visual appeal of your living room. Why not repurpose antique furniture as a magazine rack or use a gorgeous ottoman as storage? Upholstered footstools with built-in storage are another functional and chic way for organising magazines and keeping your space clutter-free. Add Depth and Character with Decorative Mirrors For adding character nothing rivals decorative mirrors. A beautiful and well-placed mirror amplifies light and creates an illusion of space. Oversized or uniquely shaped mirrors create stunning focal points in a room and mirror decor further enhances aesthetic appeal. Furthermore, mirrors are practical! Luxury is about creating a sense of comfort, ease, and elegance and a beautiful mirror placed in the hallway is a convenient way for a last appearance check before leaving home. Our mirror placement tips? Typically, the center of the mirror should be at eye level for most viewers, which is about 60-65 inches from the floor. When hanging a mirror above furniture like a console table or a fireplace, leave about 4-6 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the mirror. Functional and Stylish Shelving Units Shelving can be both functional and stylish, serving as a place to store items and as a way to display objects that are meaningful to you. Hopefully these shelving decor ideas will provide you with plenty of inspiration. Arrange items by height to create a sense of depth, for example tall candlesticks or books with smaller items. You could also arrange items on shelving units by theme, for example glassware or travel souvenirs. Rotate displays seasonally to keep things fresh. Minimalist? Floating shelves in natural wood make for simple, stylish shelving. Aim for a balanced look by arranging items symmetrically on shelving units. Declutter your shelves regularly to maintain visual harmony and only display items that you love. A curated shelf looks stylish and should add to a room’s overall aesthetic. Create Ambiance with Scented Candles Scented candles engage the senses and significantly add to the luxurious ambiance of your home. Scents like lavender and vanilla have been proven to promote relaxation, and scents in general are strongly tied to emotion. Create mood and ambiance with candles regardless of whether they're placed in a living room, bedroom, or bathroom. Like it or not, your home fragrance is what guests will remember most because scent is the most powerful memory trigger. Be sure to choose high-quality fragrance with natural essential oils for sophisticated scents. Taking time to light a few candles can turn evenings into a mindful ritual as you quietly bask in the serene glow of scented candles softly perfuming your home. Some scented candles are so sculptural and beautiful that they can act as home decor in themselves, adding a touch of elegance to coffee tables and shelves and atmospheric lighting that’s perfect to unwind in. The Versatility of Wall Art and Picture Frames If you want to dramatically enhance your home decor, consider the versatility of wall art and picture frames. Whether you want to add balance, charm, or originality these art placement tips will help you bring a room together. Wall art and ornate picture frames are the perfect way to express your personal aesthetics. Whether it's a family portrait or abstract seascape, you can customise frames to match your room’s theme. The most versatile wall decor doesn’t simply draw attention though, it creates a dynamic focal point in a room, anchoring the eye with visual structure. Arrange multiple pieces in a gallery wall for an eclectic look or choose a large-scale painting and frame for maximum impact. We love wall art as an easy way to introduce colour. You can choose to complement the room’s existing palette or artfully clash depending on personal expression. Framed art can provide texture with sculptural frames, bringing life to flat or neutral walls. One of our best art placements tips is to try hanging wall art in different areas of the home. You might be pleasantly surprised to find that a piece destined for the living room brings drama to a hallway or bathroom. Play with scale and proportion until you find a placement that works. Large-scale pieces are better suited to big walls while grouping smaller frames together creates intimacy, and can even tell a narrative. For something truly unique, why not try a decorative headboard in place of wall art in the bedroom? It creates a stunning focal point, is super luxuriant, and doubles up as art! Practical and Decorative Rugs and Carpets Rugs, carpets, and decorative rugs can significantly enhance an interior. Color, texture, and placement will significantly impact the mood and look of a room. Here are a few design principles to bear in mind. In larger rooms, use multiple rugs to define different areas. Ensure they complement each other in color and style otherwise your room could end up looking messy instead of intentionally eclectic. A rug that’s too small for example can throw off a room’s balance. Decorative rugs can tie together living room seating arrangements — just be sure to pick a rug that extends under all major pieces of furniture. When placing rugs in the dining room make sure it’s large enough to accommodate chairs even when they are pulled out. For bedrooms, try putting a rug under the bed and extending it out so you have a delightfully soft surface to step on first thing in the morning. In hallways runner rugs and carpets add color and comfort to narrow and sometimes poorly lit spaces. Decorative rugs are a great way to introduce colour and pattern to a room. Tie them in with other soft furnishing like scatter cushions and throw pillows for visual cohesion. Geometric, floral, and abstract patterns break the monotony of single-coloured walls or furniture and are easier (and cheaper) to switch out when you’re bored. For harmonious aesthetics, balance bold rugs with subdued interiors or use neutral rugs where there’s already a riot of colour. Finally, decorative rugs are also practical, providing warmth and making your space feel cosy and inviting. Elevating Your Home with Small Decor Elements Small decor elements have a big impact on the look and feel of your home. Elevating home decor can feel overwhelming but with a little imagination and sound design principles you can completely transform your space into a cosy, stylish, and welcoming home.
