The History of Jane Churchill Fabrics

The history of Jane Churchill begins in 1982. With a gift for creative originality, Jane Churchill started her own fabric and wallpaper company. The striking designs and joyful use of colours with classic patterns were an instant success. Further recognition came in 1988 when David Green, Director of the internationally renowned company Colefax and Fowler, bought the Jane Churchill brand. At the same time, David Green acquired several US textile firms, a French fabric house, and the British furniture maker Kingcome Sofas. The business continues to flourish with a head office in Mayfair and over 300 employees entrusted to preserve the integrity of the brand. The background of Jane Churchill fabrics is almost an overnight success and discerning customers still choose to enrich their homes with the brand’s memorable patterns and colour.

How to Choose the Right Jane Churchill Fabric for Your Furniture

We believe that great interior design tells a story.

Creating a narrative through your furniture fabric involves selecting materials, colors, and patterns that reflect your personality, experiences, and the ambiance you want to evoke. Here's how to choose fabric that tells a story.

  1. Choose fabric that reflects your personal history
Incorporate patterns that remind you of family history. For example, a classic pattern reminiscent of your grandparents’ living room. Or perhaps a certain chintz reminds you of your mum’s favourite reading chair
  2. Travel inspirations
Choose textiles that evoke memories of places you've visited, such as French toile or the drama of Jane Churchill’s Medina fabric.
  3. Embrace Cultural Heritage
Opt for designs that reflect your cultural background, such as Ikat, paisley, or tartan. Handwoven or embroidered fabrics that celebrate craftsmanship from around the world are a hallmark of Jane Churchill designs.
  4. Highlight Personal Interests
Nature lover? Select botanical prints or natural fibers like linen and cotton that convey your love for the outdoors. We love bold Bahia and dainty Delamere.
If you’ve a passion for contemporary art and design you can’t go wrong with a textural geometric print or a bold artistic pattern like Nuri for scale and drama.
  5. Create a Mood
If patterns aren’t your style why not create the right mood with a curated colour palette? Soft pastel hues and delicate silks and velvets create a romantic, dreamlike atmosphere. Bright colours will convey energy and youthfulness while muted tones and neutrals have a calm, softening effect.
  6. Tell a Visual Story
Weave a cohesive narrative throughout your room scheme with a specific pattern and colour palette. Determine these elements early to create visual harmony. Warm tones are relaxed and cosy while cool greys and bright white feel modern and refined. To tell a story with pattern you might opt for stripes that remind you of Riviera holidays or leafy prints that evoke a love of the outdoors.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match – or even artfully clash. Combining different fabrics and patterns will add layers to your story.
  7. Consider Fabric Texture
Jane Churchill textured fabrics are a lovely way to add depth to a room. Velvet adds luxury and softness, perhaps even a touch of decadence. Meanwhile, linen's natural texture recalls outdoor adventures. The key to working with different textures is layers. Pairing an upholstered accent chair in a soft fabric with a leather sofa adds visual interest and complexity to your story.

Care and Maintenance of Jane Churchill Fabrics

We have a few tips to help preserve your Jane Churchill fabrics. Fabric care and regular maintenance are key if you want to prevent your upholstery from growing shabby in a few years.

Velvet

  • Vacuuming. Use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment to remove dust and debris. Vacuum in the direction of the pile to avoid damaging the fabric.
  • Brushing. Use a soft-bristled brush to gently brush the velvet in the direction of the pile. This helps to keep the fabric looking fresh and free from crushed fibers.
  • Avoid Direct Sunlight. Keep velvet upholstery out of direct sunlight to prevent fading. Use curtains or blinds to shield the furniture from intense light.
  • Blotting. If a spill occurs, blot the area immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Avoid rubbing, as this can push the liquid deeper into the fibers and cause damage.
  • Spot Cleaning. Mix a small amount of mild detergent with water to create a gentle cleaning solution. Dampen a cloth with the solution and gently blot the stained area. Follow up by blotting with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue then allow the area to air dry completely.
  • Rotate cushions. Flip cushions regularly to ensure even wear and prevent crushing of the fabric.

Cotton

Some of the steps to care for cotton are similar to velvet but with a few key differences.

  • Vacuum. Use an upholstery attachment once per week to remove dust and debris.
  • Blot Spills Immediately. Act fast if you spill tea – or red wine! – on cotton. Like velvet, use a clean, dry cloth to absorb liquids and avoid rubbing.
  • Spot Clean. You can also spot clean cotton with a mix of mild detergent with water. Dab the solution onto stains, then blot with a damp cloth to rinse. Air dry completely.
  • Professional Cleaning. We recommend a deep clean by a professional at least once per year to keep your upholstery looking gorgeous. For cleaning at home a steam cleaner is a great way to keep your sofa or chair in like-new condition. Just remember to test a hidden patch first.
  • Use Fabric Protector. Apply a protector to repel stains.
  • Rotate Cushions. Regularly rotate and flip cushions to ensure even wear.
  • Use Covers. Protect with washable throws or slipcovers.

Linen

Linen is a beautiful fabric that softens over time. Its natural look is a great choice for adding texture to a room. Linen is a durable fabric but it does require some special care. In addition to all the tips above we recommend washing covers at 30 degrees or less on a slow spin cycle. A slow spin prevents the material from shrinking. Remove covers from the machine immediately when the cycle is done to stop creasing and hang them over a clothes horse. Try not to use pegs as these will mark the linen. Stubborn creases can be removed with a warm iron or steamer. As a final tip be sure to wash all the covers to maintain colour consistency and keep your linen bright.
